Broadcasting on Facebook

PanoPaper shows a camera live on Facebook, from the Facebook tab of Settings ▸ Broadcast, with the stream key from Facebook Live Producer.

What every service shares, such as choosing the camera and what happens on a patchy connection, is in Live Broadcasts.

Going live

  1. In Facebook Live Producer, in the Go live box, click Set up live video.
  2. Under Select a video source, choose Streaming software.
  3. Open Advanced settings and turn on Persistent stream key, so the key stays the same from one broadcast to the next. The stream key above it changes to the one that stays.
  4. Click Copy next to the stream key, and click 'Paste' in the Facebook tab.
  5. Click 'Go Live on Facebook'. PanoPaper opens Live Producer and counts down a minute before it starts sending: meanwhile, set up the live video there as above, then click 'Click to Start Now' in PanoPaper - or it starts by itself when the minute is up. Once Live Producer shows your camera's picture, click Facebook's Go live at the bottom left to put the broadcast on air.

The stream key stays the same from one broadcast to the next, so next time only the last step is needed.

If Facebook doesn't take the stream

After a broadcast ends, Facebook can take a minute or two before it accepts the next one. PanoPaper keeps trying by itself and says so meanwhile. If Facebook refuses the stream key, open Advanced settings in Live Producer and check that Persistent stream key is on - Facebook can turn it off by itself. Once it's on again, PanoPaper's next try goes live.

The Facebook tab

  • Stream key - the key from Facebook Live Producer. Copy it there, then click 'Paste'. PanoPaper shows only its last characters; it stays in your keychain. If what you copied doesn't look like a stream key, PanoPaper asks before saving it. To use another key, click 'Remove…' first, then paste the new one.
  • Quality - Automatic (marked Recommended), 1080p or 720p; Facebook takes 1080p at most. Automatic starts at 1080p and follows your connection, down as soon as it slows and back up while it has plenty of room, without interrupting the broadcast. While you're live, the status shows the size going out ("Live · 720p · 2.4 Mbit/s").

Under the 'Go Live on Facebook' button:

  • Find it in Facebook Live Producer - the page where your stream key is. Once a key is saved, it reads Open Facebook Live Producer and takes you to the control room for the broadcast - handy while you're live.
  • How to go live on Facebook - Facebook's own help on streaming.
